Humble Beginnings - 16" x 20" Colored Pencil & Ink, Detailing a Section of the Milton H.S. Log Cabin

Humble Beginnings

16" x 20" Colored Pencil & Ink
on Ampersand Basswood Canvas

Humble Beginnings was created with colored pencils & ink on an Ampersand basswood canvas.  It was inspired by my visit to the Milton Log Cabin in Alpharetta, GA.

Back Story: Several years ago, I was commissioned to take photos of the cabin and to write an online article for Alpharetta.us.  While completing my photo shoot at the cabin, I spent a good deal of time studying one of the front corners of the cabin.  The colors and patterns on the cut end of the logs were stunning, as was the beauty of the aging wood.

After completing the photos for the article, I took additional more stylized pictures for myself, highlighting various structural elements of this one room, one floor, hand-hewn log construction with cement chinking...not knowing exactly what, or when, I would "create" something from my photos.

Both the "what" and "when" manifested last fall while I was shopping for colored pencils at Binders Art Supply in Atlanta, where I was drawn (pun intended) to the wood canvases.  The very minute I picked up one of the 16" x 20" Ampersand Basswood canvases, I began to envision what a colored pencil rendering of one of my photos of the Milton Log Cabin would look like on a wooden canvas.

Because of the amount of line work and detail in the painting, it took six months for me to finish the piece.  But I did work on, and complete, other artwork during that time.  And my completed image on the wood, looks exactly the way I envisioned it would, on that day I first discovered the Ampersand Unprimed Basswood Canvases.___________________________________________________
